Yeah, when snow cover is marginal there will be a few exposed or snow-plough bared spots on the Hotham - DP trail so expect to walk occasionally. But there are a number of loops, usually ungroomed, running off the main trail that are in the shade and hold their cover.

August 13-14 in '11 there's the annual dog-sled races which may be of interest or a turn-off; whatever the case, the place is busy then. More here

It's a good place for kids. No fences mean you can easily keep on eye on them from your accomm. as they mess around in the snow.

Kieran August is your best bet. The trails between DP and Hotham usually hold snow through August into Sept. XC skiing doesn't need as much snow as downhill, snowshoeing even less. Fun can be had on trail and off between DP and Hotham. Hotham resort management should have snow depth records, as would several of the lodges - they all collect this stuff, bit anal really but sure they'd share with you, especially if you're staying with them. DP Central reservations would be happy to help you out with this too if you're booking through them.

Thanks Ziggy - that's what I was after.

Plotting a kid-friendly XC week and debating whether the long drive down from CBR is worth it.

Been staying there mid-Aug for several years and there's always been some snow. Sometimes not enough to ski the local trails without taking skis off occasionally.
      15/1/11 - 5:52pm
august is usually quite good but by mid september you would be taking a bit of a risk

So, any Victorians got any thoughts or observations about the reliability of snow at Dinner Plain in August or early Sept? Is there anywhere I can find snow depth records?
