Bluebird day here this morning. Pity I have to work soon but just got in from a few quick turns.
Yesterday was awesome. After some warm weather and no snow for a while the lower mountain was looking punished. Then came the rain and destroyed a lot of the thinning cover down low. The super trails etc still have a base due to the massive snow making earlier in the year but they were just elephant snot.
Then came the snow! Started about 10pm on monday night and dumped for a few hours. We got about 5-10cm at the bottom of the mountain and double that up top. Mountain was spectacular tuesday. Winds kept some people away which just left more for us. Lighter and dryer than I expected it was right up there with the best snow of the season. Filled in lots of holes and the cover up high is still awesome.
Lower runs are now totally limited to man made lines and will no doubt start getting heavy in the afternoon again from today onwards but yesterday it was awesome.
Merritts, Antons, Sponars, all in fantastic condition. Hard to believe it is mid September.

Very nice day on the hill on Saturday. Was up the mountain for first lifts and enjoyed the groomers first up. High noon was nice, but a little sticky in places (even at 8.40am). Did a couple runs there, then headed up Sponars for a few before the crowds got there. Exhibition was really good, the snow was soft, and almost dry (9am), and the first 3-4 runs down were pretty good, very good actually. Headed back down high noon, and it was already pretty slushy at the bottom by 9.30am. Over the day te cover just got softer and softer, with the lower slopes very sticky, more creamy than late spring heavy slush. Did a couple runs down Lovers leap and the run next to it (forget the name), and it was so soft that it practically felt like surfing.
Rode the whole mountain during the day, Little Beauty probably had the nicest snow that I rode, probably due to the lack of traffic. The cover over the whole mountain was still excellent, however there are a few rocks and bushes starting to poke through in the more exposed areas where the sun bakes down.
Excellent day on the hill, really really enjoyed it. Thredbo cannot be beat when its top to bottom on a deep base

Ice ice baby. Great blue skies, no wind, but the runs were very icy with quite a few patches of death cookies.

Rode Friday, Saturday and Sunday just past on probably the best snow I've had for a long time.
Friday was sunny, nice cover accross all the groomers...it didn't bump out up to much even on the supertrails, and stayed dry until the last 100m or so. Very good dry cover over the whole mountain.
Rode the entire resort on Saturday in excellent conditions. Upper mountain was best, and the ques were very short on the t-bars. Rode sponars in the morning, then went over to Karels where I was the only one riding the windblown up there (probably had something to do with the howling wind). Cover was fresh and dry, very very good. Merrits was probably the pick for snow quality, dry and windblown...with lots of it. Dream run is open but needs more on the lower sections to stay that way.
Sunday was an great day. Snow report said 10cm of fresh...there was up to 15cm in the trees up top. I pretty much rode the cruiser all day, there was no need to go anywhere else. The wind and the snowfalls filled in the old tracks pretty much all day (with a bit of variation). Had some nice deepish freshies in the trees, and it seemed like I was the only person up there taking advantage of this! No lift cue to speak of, and whoever was there were beginners. Went up around antons, but visibility was pretty bad for most of the morning.
I'm stoked, can't wait to get back down there.

Summary for Tues/Wed/Thurs - plenty of snow, sunny, virtually everything open, zero wind, nicely groomed runs and easy conditions making everyone look like an expert.
Off the runs it was good (and deserted as usual) but later in the week it was firm/icy in the morning, softening as the day goes on. But even those runs which often struggle for cover like Funnelweb, Cannonball and the lower runs are looking good all the way to the bottom.
GCB and Basin are blanketed and while snow conditions there varied day-to-day and even morning v afternoon, it's all better than average.
With more good snowfalls likely in the next week, now is a great time to extract value from the world's most expensive lift tickets.

Sorry for the delayed report, this is for Thredbo, Sunday 26th July - Sat 2nd August.
We arrived Sat night and everyone was just RAVING about the week of snow, it was more than promising!! Sunk a quick beer and did a warm up run with Flares and the ski school on Sat night, always wonderful to be back under fireworks, home again.
Settled in Sunday morning, bought a 5.5 day pass and hit the lift at 1pm, a good 3 hours on great snow to get the legs back into it.
Monday was a BIG powder morning, which is a bit daunting so early in the week when I spend all day at a computer now!! Got on one of the first dozen chairs and declined a first run through Swaggies with mates, we warmed up under Slowgums chair through the trees and eventually hit Golf Course Bowl after a big morning to still find knee deep light and dry freshies at 2pm... there was just no-one on the hill, it was amazing!
Tuesday morning provided the very best piste skiing you would find anywhere in the world... groomers did their magic the night before and then an extra 10cm of fresh on top provided the most amazing morning of skiing. We realised we had hit the jackpot with our Feb booking for this week!!!
Weds was the perfect bluebird day and we finished the day with a Dead Horse Gap run around 2pm. Despite the beautiful day, the ski there was HARD work on the second half, one of the hardest DHG runs we've ever done (boot deep and crunchy on top, real jump turns stuff). Still nice to be out there though and to meet with friends in the carpark for drinks.
Thursday was the BIG wind day and it was oh so sweet to be back on that famous Thredbo windblown, we kept going for hours and hours! Sponars and Antons are always the best on these days, the winds keep the crowds away and you have run after run of fresh snow.
Friday morning was RAIN RAIN RAIN which we knew would be closely followed by the big front, so we slept in til 9, had a late breakfast, went back to sleep at 10, got up at 11.30 to find it absolutely dumping, and headed up the hill at noon for the most fantastic powder afternoon till they closed the lifts. Just did round after round of Golfies, freshies every single run, and finished the day on Funnel Web (still fresh) at 4.30pm - amazing!. Have not seen it snow that heavily for many years, at one point you could not even see the hotel from the bottom of the milk run!!!
Saturday was just awesome (running out of superlatives!!!), fresh snow and windblown and we were lucky to get 6th chair in front of a HUGE Q. By now legs are ski FIT and we went hard all day. There was a couple of turns of mine up at the Basin in fresh on the end of week roundup at the Thredbo site!
Overall, one of the best week's skiing I've had for many many years.
GET UP THERE!!!!

pfffffft pffffffffffft pfffffffffft
spitting the snow out of my teeth!
Dumping down all day up high and the skiing was sensational. Winds picked up about lunch time so headed down a bit to the middle slopes which were topping up with nice freshies. True Blue and Little Beauty were sensational.
I LOVE freshies!

Another day in paradise. First up this morning was off to the Bluff and Cannonball. Freshies were lovely up there and only the locals to be seen.
True Blue was also in fine form and after a dozen circuits I still hadn't set foot on the supertrail apart from the run into the lift.
Headed over to Waimea about lunch time and that was just magic and even Dream Run was in pretty good shape. Still a bit ordinary at the bottom but the fall line section of it was very nice.

Oh yeah baby!
Woke up this morning to full on blizzards up high so headed up early and freshies all over the place. Some poor suckers stayed on the groomed runs and I guess they had fun but it was off piste where it was great.
Rain yesterday softened the cover but the overnight freeze firmed it up nicely in most places and then 20+cm of fresh with more in windblown areas.
Everywhere off piste was great fun. Michael's Mistake was awesome, a bit windswept in places getting to it but once behind the trees it was great.
Apparently the groomed runs were pretty good too - actually I did do a few laps of High Noon and returned via the super trail and both had a great cover topped with fresh all morning.
